I’m driving to work while I read my emails and brush my teeth. The road is my computer screen inside a manila folder. My day is flattened.

There is nothing more natural than developing a sense of enlightenment through your care for another. Give me your hand. I see nothing more natural than reaching out to touch my lover’s face and seeing everything beyond real reflected back to me. Your sleepy head carries more prayers to me than a church pew ever could.

There is a mirror thick with patina you both stare through, touching glass but knowing reality is something else entirely. To see someone who reflects your existence back onto yourself, and to do the same for them, must be one of the closest things to God I’ve ever witnessed.

You realize living is different in the presence of love, and you can feel the color leave your system when you peel yourself away from your warm lover’s body to go to work in the morning. I rip myself away from my own soul to join traffic and time sheets. I can feel it waiting for my return, glowing faintly and warmly and turning under the covers.

The LC4 first appeared at the 1929 Salon d’Automne in Paris on a concept stand titled L’Équipement de la Maison, the interior equipment of the house, and met with division. Its tubular chrome steel and continuously adjustable reclining mechanism looked more like something from a hospital or a factory than a living room. That was the point. The body, Le Corbusier wrote, should not be furniture’s client in the decorative sense. Furniture should be a servant of the body’s actual needs.

A small bookshelf, however chaotic, is furniture. A floor-to-ceiling bookshelf that takes an entire wall is architecture. It changes the room’s proportion, its acoustic quality, and its smell. It becomes the room’s dominant surface. You orient furniture toward it or away from it, the same way you’d orient furniture toward a fireplace.
